Feeling awkward? Good. Do it again.

This is a thought experiment.
In about three minutes, I’ll convince you that you need to go out and do something dorky and silly this week. In about a week (plus minus one day), you will want to thank me.
Ready? Let’s go!

When was the last time “boring and safe” made you happy?

The cliché is true: life happens when you take a chance.
From your favourite song to your best friend, life is a series of discoveries. Good things don’t appear out of thin air, our circumstances make them happen. We make them happen, whether we realise it or not.
Think about it. Your go-to café? You found it when you stepped out of your home and walked in there for the first time.
Your current song on loop? You have it because you gave a new song a chance.
Your best friend? They wouldn’t be here if you never had that first semi-awkward or purely random conversation.
If all our days were identical and predictable, we would never find good things. Delight finds us when we get out of the mundane and enter something new. And the funny thing about “new things”? They can be awkward sometimes, just a little bit. But that’s a good thing.

Awkwardness will save you from a zombie life
Awkwardness will save you from a zombie life
Wake up. Get ready. Work/College. Eat. Scroll. Sleep. Repeat.
Do something for long enough and your mind starts doing it on auto-pilot. That’s how we run our life. Passively. The long commute to work. Climbing up the stairs. Brushing our teeth. Eating breakfast.
Sure, predictability is comforting and safe. But it’s also so boring.
There is thrill in breaking the pattern.
Signing up for dance classes and spending weeks being clumsy may not be tempting but the day you finally notice yourself getting better? Boy, that’s fun.
A house party with strangers where eventually you let loose and conversations flow? Priceless.
Would you go on a first date if someone handed over all conversations, all jokes, and moments beforehand? No! There’s fun in that uncertainty. You getting awkward and nervous? That’s you experiencing life, fully and without filters.
No one wants to zombie-walk their way from one day to the next, stuck with the duties of adulthood.
Awkwardness is proof that you are taking a shot, you are doing something new. Sure, it’s a little uncomfortable but do you know what’s more uncomfortable? The realisation that you played it safe your whole life.

Not just me, science agrees.

Ever heard of “affective forecasting”? It’s our brain trying to predict or forecast how future experiences will make us feel. But the truth is, no matter how hard we try, the future is unpredictable. And because our brain’s wired to protect us, it gets a little dramatic with its predictions.
Overestimating how “disastrous” singing at karaoke would be. Stage fright right before a big performance. The actual performance or experience is never as bad as our anxious thoughts would have us believe.
This “affective forecasting” fallacy is true for most life scenarios. That little voice in your head hesitating before you do anything out of the ordinary? Acknowledge it. Thank it. And then go on your merry way (unless that voice is telling you not to go into the forest at night. In that case, definitely listen to it.).

The secret sauce to a happy life
The secret sauce to a happy life
Embrace the awkwardness. Pat yourself on the back for experimenting with life, that’s what it’s for, silly.
The Instagram reels about “top things to do in your city”? No use in saving them if you keep procrastinating instead of actually going.
The language classes you’ve been meaning to take? Who’s stoping you except your own thoughts about how it won’t be easy?
So, this week, why not sign up for something you’ve been eyeing for a while? The cool events, book clubs, or the Saturday club night. Don’t even give yourself the time to second guess.
Find experiences that are worth leaving the couch for!
Show up. If it’s awkward, just be present until it isn’t.
Life’s too short to play it safe.
